Dram
Dram is an informal term for a small portion of whisky. The term refers to a portion size rather than a fixed unit of measurement, and the size varies with context, social practice, and local tradition. In Scottish and broadly whisky culture, a dram functions as a social gesture and a simple way to enjoy and discuss the aroma and flavor of a whisky.
Size and measurement units Since there is no official standard, dram size varies considerably. In practice, a dram is often in the range of 20–40 ml. For a quick overview, one can describe: - Home or private settings: approx. 25–40 ml (a small portion). - Bars and events: around 25–30 ml per dram in most whisky experiences. - Tasting or sampling rounds: 15–20 ml per glass to taste several variants. - For special occasions: portions can be 40–50 ml or more.
Serving and sensation Dram is most often served neat (undiluted) in small glasses, often in a snifter, Glencairn, or other whisky glass. Many enjoy the dram at room temperature to obtain the full spectrum of aromas; water is often added in small amounts to open up the aroma and flavor. In a tasting presentation, the dram size can be adjusted to enable more tastings.
History and origin The word dram has deep roots in Scottish culture and was historically used as an informal term for a portion of liquid. The exact size has changed over time and varies between places and traditions. In modern usage, dram primarily denotes a small, socially accepted portion size, without a fixed unit of measurement.
Usage and significance in practice In everyday speech, the dram is used as a social ritual: pouring a dram for a friend or guest signals hospitality and camaraderie. In whisky circles, the term is also used in descriptions and notes to indicate that a given portion was meant as a simple, focused tasting sample.
Related terms Dram differs from more formal portions or units of measurement and often appears in written reviews, conversations, and marketing as a small, introductory tasting sample.
