Speyside

Geografi og afgrænsning

Speyside is a whisky region in northern Scotland, located along the Spey River and forming the eastern part of the Highlands, which are traditionally regarded as part of the Highlands. Because of its dense concentration of distilleries and their distinctive styles, the region is often treated as its own separate region.

Stil og karakteristika

Distilleries in Speyside typically have a malt-driven style with sweet, fruity notes. Many whiskies are aged in casks that impart vanilla, honey, and caramel as the dominant base notes. Sherry casks are widespread and contribute deeper fruit-spice notes such as dried fruits and raisins. The flavor profile ranges from fresh apple and pear to nuts and marzipan. The vast majority of Speyside whiskies are not peated, but some well-known cupping expressions may have a hint of peat.

Lagring og fade

The region often uses a combination of American oak (bourbon) and European oak, especially for sherry casks. The mild, moist climate in the valleys supports controlled and often longer maturation than in other regions.

Kendte destillerier og mangfoldighed

Macallan, Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Balvenie, Aberlour, Cragganmore, Strathisla, BenRiach and Benromach are among the most prominent. The large concentration of distilleries provides a broad range of expressions from classic, fruity to more complex, spicy offerings.
