Water & Dilution
Water addition to whisky refers to the careful addition of small amounts of water to cask-strength whisky to alter the aroma and flavor experience.
Effect on aroma and flavor
- Small amounts of water (a couple of drops for 25–30 ml whisky) can open up complex aroma notes and give a more open and lighter mouthfeel.
- Too much water can dilute the aromas, dull the nose, and make the taste more uniform and less nuanced.
Practical guidelines
1) Start with 1–2 drops for about 25–30 ml whisky in a glass. 2) Stir gently and let it rest for 15–30 seconds to allow the water to interact with the aromas. 3) Assess the aroma and taste; if desired, add a further drop at a time and repeat the process. 4) Stop when the aromas are clear, and the balance between aroma and taste is reached.
Notes
With cask-strength whiskies, water can alter the balance more markedly than with standard 40% ABV.
Recommendations for enjoyment
- For serious tasting: use water to adjust the aromas to personal preferences, and note which changes are observed.
