Non-Chill Filtered (NCF)
Non-Chill Filtered (NCF) refers to whisky that does not undergo cold filtration before bottling. The absence of cold filtration preserves natural oils and fat-soluble compounds, resulting in an oilier mouthfeel and often a richer aroma profile.
- Mouthfeel and body: It provides a fuller, more oilier mouthfeel and often a longer, warmer finish than corresponding filtered variants.
- Aroma and flavor: Preserves fruity and spicy notes as well as greater complexity, since esters and glycerols are not removed by filtration.
- Clarity under cold conditions: When chilled or at low ABV, NCF whisky can become hazy or appear cloudy due to unremoved fat-soluble compounds that crystallize or form cloudiness at low temperatures.
- Practical considerations: NCF describes a more natural style and is often associated with less filtration in production; many enthusiasts value the more pronounced nose and palate experience, as well as finish characteristics.
