Cold filtration (English: Chill Filtration) is a process used in whisky production to remove small particles and fatty acids that can cause the whisky to become cloudy at low temperatures.
When the whisky is cooled to around 0–4 °C, certain natural oils and proteins solidify and are subsequently filtered out. The result is a clearer whisky that does not become hazy when served with ice or water.
However, many enthusiasts prefer non-chill-filtered whisky, as the filtration is believed to remove some of the natural oils that contribute to flavor and mouthfeel.

Fun fact:
Whisky bottled at an alcohol strength above 46% is rarely chill-filtered, as the higher alcohol content prevents cloudiness.
