Batch Strength

  • Definition: Batch Strength (batchstyrke) denotes the alcohol strength at which the entire batch is bottled. The strength is fixed for all bottles in the batch and intended to ensure uniformity in taste and aroma between bottles, regardless of minor variations in aging and bottling.
  • Formål og anvendelse: The purpose of batch strength is to deliver a consistent experience across bottles from the same production. By defining a fixed ABV, the producer can preserve the brand's profile and give the consumer a predictable experience of the whisky's strength and balance.
  • Fastsættelse af styrken: The strength is typically set based on sensory evaluation and a balance between alcohol strength, body, and the dominant notes in the whiskey. It can be referred to as 'half-cask strength' in marketing, meaning the strength lies between cask strength and the typical bottle strength. The specific ABV is recorded on the label together with the batch number.
  • Fadstyrke vs batch strength: Cask strength is the strength of the whisky directly from the cask, without water addition, and typically lies in the range of 50–70% ABV. Batch strength normally lies lower than cask strength and higher than the final bottle strength (typically 40–46% ABV), depending on the producer's profile.
  • Fordele og ulemper: - Fordele: Consistency between bottles in the batch; easier to reproduce the desired profile across products. - Ulemper: Less variation and flexibility in single-cask releases; requirement for precise water addition and bottling control to maintain consistency.
  • Etikettering og kommunikation: Labels should clearly indicate ABV and batch number. If marketing refers to 'batch strength' or 'half-cask strength', this should be described clearly to avoid misunderstandings about dilution and cask strength.
