Annual Statement (Årsangivelse)

Definition and purpose

Age Statement (Årsangivelse) indicates the minimum age of the youngest whisky in the bottle. As a rule, a label such as 12 years means that the youngest component in the blend or in the single-fill whisky is at least 12 years old. However, there is no guarantee of the average age of the contents in the bottle.

Key principles

  • The age statement refers to the youngest part of the contents of the entire bottle. If several different casks or distillates are involved, the youngest part must be at least the stated age.
  • For blends, the 12-year age statement means that all components in the blend are at least 12 years old, and at least one component contributes 12 years or more of age.
  • For single malt or single grain, the age statement refers to the youngest whisky included in the bottle, such that the whole product is at least 12 years old.

How the age is calculated in practice

  • Blends: The youngest part determines the age. Older subcomponents can elevate the perceived complexity, but the age on the bottle stated as a minimum reflects the youngest component.
  • For single malt/grain: All parts of the final whisky must have reached the stated age, and thus the label reflects the age of the youngest cask or source in the blend, if the bottle consists of several sources.
  • Marketing and labelling: Age statements generally follow industry guidelines, which largely focus on the youngest part rather than the average age. Regulations may vary between jurisdictions, but the basic point is broadly recognised in the whisky industry.

NAS and other designations

  • NAS (Non-Age-Statement): Bottles that do not have a stated age do not disclose a minimum age. The contents may therefore be of varying ages, and there is no guarantee for the youngest component.
  • Vintage or older designations: Some products use vintage-type designations or specific years for the whole batch instead of a numerical age. These designations refer to the composition and characteristics of the product rather than a strict youngest-age marking.

Practical implications for the consumer

  • A label with "12 years" gives an indication of style and development: younger age levels often yield fresh and bright expressions, while higher age typically contributes depth and complexity through longer cask maturation.
  • Age statements do not necessarily reveal the producer's overall insight into quality or price; other factors such as cask type, distillation method, and production volume also play a major role.

Summary

  • The age statement indicates the minimum age of the youngest whisky included in the bottle.
  • The stated age does not indicate the average age of all components.
  • In blends, the age refers to the youngest component, and in single malts/grains to the youngest cask or part of the composition. NAS labeling frees the brand from a specific age but provides equivalent information to the consumer through other descriptions of the product's character.
