Scottish evening
Scottish evening is an organized event focusing on Scottish whiskey and related culture. The event gives participants the opportunity to explore the regional diversity of whiskey, understand producers and cask aging, and train sensory skills through guided tastings.
Structure and program
Typical length and format vary, but a standard evening normally lasts between 2 and 4 hours and can include the following elements:
- Welcome and introduction to the evening's theme and regions
- Guided tastings of 4–6 whiskies from different regions (for example Speyside, Highlands, Islay, Lowlands, Campbeltown and Islands)
- Break with water, light food and time to note impressions
- Conclusion with collection of notes and opportunity for questions
Regions and stylistic characteristics
- Islay: marked smoke and maritime notes, often with dried sea air and seaweed; the finish can be long and warm
- Speyside: fruity, vanilla and honey, often round and elegant
- Highlands: great variation; can range from light and herbaceous to deep and complex
- Lowlands: often lighter body, malty and soft notes
- Campbeltown: salty, spicy and sometimes subdued smoky character
- Islands: broad spectrum, often smoky or maritime notes in more robust expressions
Glass choice, serving and sensory
- Glass: tulip-shaped glass (for example Glencairn) or other nosing glasses that concentrate the aroma
- Pouring: around 4 cl per glass; temperature around 14–18 °C to open the aromas
- Water and neutralization: use water to rinse the glass between samples and to adjust aromas during blind tastings; note aromas first without water and then with a small drop of water to see changes in aroma
- Sensory notes: assess color, aroma, taste and finish; describe notes such as fruit, vanilla, caramel, oak flavor, smoke, spice, salt and sweetness
Example program for a typical tasting (2–3 hours)
1) Welcome and introduction (10–15 min) 2) First round: 4 cl Speyside-focused (25–30 min) 3) Second round: Islay or other smoky classification (25–30 min) 4) Break and light food pairing (15–20 min) 5) Third round: Highlands and/or Campbeltown (25–30 min) 6) Recap, sharing notes and Q&A (15–20 min)
Practical tips for the organizer
- Adjust the number of samples to the number of participants and the time frame; too many samples can overwhelm the senses
- Ensure ample water and the ability to rinse the glasses
- Give participants clear descriptions of each sample, and have them note expected notes and ratings
- Instruct about responsible alcohol consumption and available cooling options and food
