Definition

A markrelease is a term for a limited release of whisky that is exclusively distributed and sold on the distillery's physical grounds or at special events such as festivals. The release typically belongs to the distillery's special or festival-related activities and is particularly aimed at collectors and dedicated visitors.

Release location and limitation

The bottles are normally not available in ordinary stores or online sales. Access is limited to the distillery's grounds or the selected festival where the release takes place. The number of bottles is limited and is often indicated as part of the markrelease, with each bottle bearing a sequential number.

Structure and labeling

Markrelease bottles are typically numbered and carry clear branding, the release date, and the distillery. Sometimes they are accompanied by a certificate documenting authenticity and order number. The label may reflect the particular event (e.g., festival name or the day being marked).

Sales, price and distribution

Because of the limited availability, the price is often higher than for standard bottles. Sales take place within the specially constrained context (the distillery's grounds or festival) and often over a short period, making them collectibles.
