Village tasting
Definition A village whisky tasting, in a whisky context, refers to a smaller, locally organized tasting, often held in a village or small town, where a selection of whiskies is presented to participants. The event aims to promote community, open dialogue about impressions, and learning through the experience of different styles, regions, and production methods.
Structure and program A typical village whisky tasting lasts 2–4 hours and follows a structured, yet informal framework. Participants arrive for a welcome, followed by a guided tasting of 4–6 whiskies distributed across flights. Each flight is accompanied by brief descriptions of style, origin, and maturation, as well as suggestions for aromas and tasting notes. Many events offer light food pairings from local producers or kitchens that complement certain types of whiskies. The ending often includes a Q&A or an informal discussion about personal tasting experiences.
Equipment and execution For a good experience, Glencairn or tulip-shaped glasses are often used to concentrate aroma and flavor. Participants are encouraged to note distinctive notes and compare patterns in aroma, taste, and mouthfeel. The whiskies on offer are presented in flights to facilitate parallel comparison. If needed, there may be spit containers and running water to cleanse the palate.
Participation, logistics and price The age limit is usually 18 years or older, and tickets are sold by the organizer or by local cultural associations. The price typically reflects the number of whiskies, facilities, and any food pairings. Organizers should ensure accessibility for people with disabilities and provide information about transportation and parking.
Tasting technique and notes Participants are encouraged to focus on four steps: smelling the aroma, first impression, mouthfeel, and aftertaste. It can be useful to keep personal notes on color, aroma, sweetness, spice, smoke, and mouthfeel for later reference or discussion.
Cultural significance and purpose Village tastings promote local collaboration among associations, small producers, and citizens, and provide a low barrier to entry into the world of whisky, while connoisseurs have the opportunity to discover regional variations.
