Christmas tasting
Definition and purpose
Christmas tasting is a seasonal whisky tasting that typically takes place in December. The event often focuses on Christmas-themed whiskies or those with spicy and warm notes, and aims to give participants the opportunity to compare different products in a festive, social setting.
Program and conduct
Typical elements include: - 4–8 samples spread across the evening, often with a guide or description of each pour. - Glassware choices such as Glencairn or tulip-shaped glasses to enhance aroma. - Available water kettles and spit buckets; short breaks between samples. - An opportunity to discuss notes and judgments in a group or panel. - There may be themes such as spicy notes, sherry finishes, or port wine casks.
Tasting notes and stylistic characteristics
During Christmas tastings, often spicy and warm notes such as cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and honey are highlighted, along with vanilla, caramel, and oak notes from the cask. The profiles can range from lightly sweet to more robust, dry finishes. Some participants prefer whiskies finished in sherry or port wine casks, which contribute deeper fruit notes; others focus on smoke and dark spices in specially selected casks.
Serving and pairing
- Serving temperature of around 15–20°C to preserve aroma and flavor nuances.
- Typical portions: about 4–6 cl per glass, with a short sip break between samples.
- Pairing options include dark chocolate, nuts, cheeses and cookies.
Participation and materials
- Events are organized by whisky clubs, bars or distilleries and may require advance registration.
- Participants are encouraged to note the aroma and taste for each sample and to discuss their observations in a group.
- Materials such as a notepad and pencil or a digital notes app are recommended.
