An ice ball is a large, spherical ice cube for use in whisky and other spirits. The rounded shape provides a lower surface area relative to volume, which makes it melt more slowly than traditional cube-shaped ice cubes and thus reduces dilution in the glass.

Size and shape: Typically an ice ball has a diameter of around 40–60 mm (about 4–6 cm). The spherical shape minimizes the surface area relative to volume and therefore creates more controlled cooling and slower dilution.

Materials and production: Ice balls are usually produced in silicone or plastic molds, sometimes in stainless steel with a tight lid. The water can be prepared from filtered or distilled water, and many recommend boiling the water and letting it cool to obtain a clearer ice without air bubbles. The balls are frozen completely and then released carefully.

Use in whisky: An ice ball is placed in the glass when serving whisky. It cools the drink without diluting the flavor too quickly and provides a more even temperature change than smaller ice. Melted water from the ball contributes to controlled dilution, which can highlight certain aromas over time.

Care and maintenance: After use, rinse the balls and the molds with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and let dry, or dry with a clean towel. Store in a clean, airtight container in the freezer to avoid flavor transfer from other foods or kitchen odors.

Variations: In addition to the spherical form, there are also larger or smaller balls, as well as special designs in different materials and with different temperature properties. Balls are primarily used in whisky service and in certain cocktails, where they provide cooling without noticeable dilution.
