Pre-order
Definition
Pre-ordering (pre-order) in a whisky context refers to the process by which a buyer reserves or purchases a bottle before the official release date or before general distribution. This practice is used especially for limited releases, single-cask releases, and exclusive bottles expected to be in high demand.
Process
- The retailer or distillery opens a pre-order option for a limited period.
- The customer provides name, address, payment details, as well as the desired number of bottles and any delivery restrictions.
- Payment can be made in full at order confirmation or as a deposit with the balance due upon dispatch/delivery. Some offers specify a particular payment policy.
- Delivery typically occurs on or after the official release date. Areas with limited distribution may receive delivery later or only have the option to pick up.
- For special releases there may be lotteries or allocation-based distribution; not all applicants will receive a bottle.
Terms and risks
- Terms vary between retailers and jurisdictions; read the order confirmation for binding terms and cancellations.
- Cancellations and refunds of the deposit depend on the retailer's policy.
- Price and costs: the advertised price is normally applicable, but VAT, duties, and shipping may apply upon delivery.
- Risk: there is no guarantee of delivery on pre-orders; production, delayed batches, or logistical complications can affect the outcome.
Advantages and considerations
- Advantage: ensures access to highly sought-after bottles and helps producers and retailers plan production and distribution.
- Considerations: financial binding and the risk of paying for something that may not be delivered as expected or on time.
Practical tips
- Confirmation and terms: keep the order confirmation and read the terms, including per-customer purchase limits and applicable fees.
- Authenticity and sales channel: buy only from authorized retailers or distilleries to ensure authenticity and customer service.
- Collection and potential value increases: consider how the pre-order fits into your collection or investment strategy; be aware of price fluctuations and the secondary market.
