Barrel transfer is the process of moving the whisky from one cask to a new or different cask during maturation in order to influence maturation development and the flavor profile.
- Purpose
- Renew contact with the wood and alter the aroma by exposing the spirit to new wood and its toasted oak notes (vanilla, caramel, spices).
- Adjust color, body and the balance between sweetness and dryness.

The process
- Transfer of whisky from one cask to a new cask or another cask (e.g., from a used bourbon barrel to a fresh French oak or to a sherry cask) to influence the wood's contribution.
- Hygiene and controlled conditions: the casks are cleaned, oxygen exchange is minimized, and temperature and humidity are monitored.
