Exclusive bottle
Definition and scope
An exclusive bottle is a whisky bottling released in a very limited number by a distillery or brand. The releases often mark special events, milestones, or collaborations and constitute a significant part of a collection. The number of bottles is typically well below mass releases and ranges from a few hundred to a few thousand, depending on the producer and the theme.
Characteristics
- Limited quantity and often numbered; a typical format is "X of Y".
- Special packaging: box, printed materials and a certificate or hang tag.
- Content and bottling: can be a single malt or a special blend; often bottled at higher ABV or as cask strength, and sometimes with a specific cask finish.
- Origin and documentation: label design and provenance documentation, often with details about origin.
Tasting notes and aroma
Notes vary with cask choice and maturation. Generally, exclusive releases are described as deeper in color and with oak notes (vanilla, oak), spices and dried fruits, undertones of caramel or honey, and a longer finish.
Market value and collectability
Limited bottles often have high secondary value due to scarcity and prestige. Price development is variable and depends on the distillery, historical significance, and global demand.
Storage and handling
Store cool, dark, and away from direct sunlight. The use of horizontal storage helps protect the seal and the label.
