Batch number

The batch number is a unique identification number that is printed on the bottle or packaging and designates a defined production batch. It enables the producer to trace the batch of spirits that was distilled, stored, and bottled as a single unit.

In whisky terms, a batch typically refers to the set of cask-aged whiskies that are bottled in a single release. The batch size varies among producers and editions: smaller batches are seen in limited editions, while larger batches are used for regular releases. The batch number is used for quality control and recalls if necessary, and as an aid to historical traceability.

Format and placement: Batch numbers are typically found on the label, the back, or the cap, and can be numeric, alphanumeric, or a combination such as B12 or Batch 04-2023. It is not a measure of age or flavor profile and does not necessarily indicate consistency between different batches.

Relationship to other concepts: A batch number is used in some cases as a synonym or as a supplementary identifier; and age statements describe the whisky's average or minimum age, not the batch.

Practical consumer guidance: When comparing different releases, small variations in color, bouquet, and taste can arise due to differences in which casks were blended together in the particular batch.
