Special Release

Definition

Special Release (in Danish often referred to as a special edition) refers to a whisky bottling released by the distillery in limited quantities. Such releases are often launched to mark an event, celebrate an anniversary, or experiment with special cask finishes and blends that differ from the distillery's core range. Because production is limited, each release often has a distinctive set of characteristics and unique packaging.

Characteristics

  • Limited number of bottles: The number of bottles is set by the distillery and varies between releases; releases are often available in small quantities and may be launched globally or regionally.
  • Cask finishes and blends: Many Special Releases undergo special cask finishes, for example sherry, madeira, port, sauternes, or experimental cask combinations. Some releases use new or older cask types or aged whiskies in unexpected blends.
  • Age statement and ABV: Age statement is not always included; when present, it typically reflects the release's average aging. Alcohol strength is often higher than in the core range and may be cask strength or close to it, with ABV typically between 46% and 60%.
  • Labeling and packaging: The releases often bear unique labels, batch numbers and cask numbers, as well as distinctive artwork and packaging.

Tasting notes and style

  • Flavor varies significantly between batches, but Special Releases typically offer high intensity and complexity. Typical notes include ripe fruit, dried fruit, vanilla, caramel, spices and sometimes smoke or oak notes. The finish is often long and warm with warm wood notes.

Use and Enjoyment

  • Special Releases are often aimed at collectors and connoisseurs. Their limited availability makes them desirable and can appreciate in value over time. Recommended enjoyment: neat or with a few drops of water to open the aromas.
