Tung whisky

A heavy whisky is characterized by a powerful body and high intensity in both aroma and flavor. The color is often deep and dark, typically as a result of long maturation and the use of dark casks, for example sherry casks.

Characteristics

• Body: dense and full-bodied, often with a slight viscosity.
• Alcohol: often a higher ABV, typically around 46% or more, which supports the powerful profile.

Aroma and flavor

• Aroma: notes of dark fruits (prunes, raisins), chocolate, coffee, tobacco, licorice and roasted nuts; undertones of vanilla and spices; some variants have a hint of smoke.
• Flavor: full-bodied and robust; notes of caramel, dark chocolate, dried fruits and spices such as black pepper and cinnamon. Structure and tannins give a long-lasting presence on the palate.

Finish

• Long and warm; enduring oak notes and spices.

Cask aging and style

• Many heavy whiskies are aged longer in oak casks and gain depth from blended cask types such as sherry or port wine casks.
