A tasting bottle is a small bottle designed to deliver small amounts of whisky for tasting. Typical volume is in the range of 2–5 cl (20–50 ml). The smaller size makes it possible to present variations from a distillery or at a tasting evening without using a full bottle.
Physical characteristics: - Material: most often glass; smaller models can also be plastic, but glass is most common to preserve the aroma and color. - Capacity: 2–5 cl (20–50 ml). - Closure: cork stopper, screw cap or tight-fitting cap; many models have a small mouth opening that facilitates aroma release. - Labeling: may be unlabeled, or have temporary labels indicating contents.
Usage: - Used at tastings, in 'flight' sets, or as part of gift packs. - Allows evaluation of color, aroma, and taste without opening a full bottle. - Suitable for blind tasting, where numbers or color codes are used for identification.
Storage and handling: - Store cool and dark, away from direct sunlight and high heat, to limit changes in aroma and color. - Open tasting bottles often have a limited shelf life due to oxidation; keep tightly closed and at an appropriate temperature, if possible.
Variations and accessories: - Types: standard tasting bottle, tasting sets with several small bottles, or special flight sets. - Labels and documentation: standardized labels for tracking contents, origin, and vintage are used in professional contexts; home use may use temporary markings.
