Online tasting

Definition

An online whisky tasting is a remote tasting in which participants conduct a structured evaluation of different whiskies over the internet. Participants often receive a tasting kit with small samples and accompanying materials, so that a shared experience can be conducted under the guidance of a host or moderator.

Preparation and content

  • Preparation: the organizer provides or coordinates delivery of a tasting kit and necessary materials (a notepad, glasses, and possibly water). Participants sign up, pick a date, and gain access to the virtual event.
  • Content and format: a typical tasting kit contains 4–8 small samples (each under 5 cl), a brief description and a suggested tasting order; glasses such as Glencairn or similar are recommended. The duration is often 60–120 minutes. The host guides through nose, palate and finish and shares background information about each proof.

Technical infrastructure and participant requirements

  • Platforms: Zoom, Teams, Google Meet or specialized platforms for tastings.
  • Infrastructure: a stable internet connection, adequate audio and video, and the ability to share presentations or digital materials. Participants should have a quiet environment and appropriate lighting.

Sensory focus and learning outcomes

  • Participants record aromas, flavors and mouthfeel and document them in a structured form. The benefits of online tastings include greater flexibility, lower travel costs and the ability to bring together participants from different geographic areas. Challenges can include limited sensory engagement due to audio/visual latency and fewer opportunities for collective aroma experiences.

Applications

  • Corporate events, whisky clubs and tastings with a focus on education or social interaction.
