highball glass
Description
The highball glass is a tall, slim glass designed for long drinks, combining whisky with a mixer such as soda water, cola or ginger ale. The glass provides ample space for ice and a sufficient amount of liquid, so the drink stays cold and dilutes slowly.
Shape and dimensions
- Typical volume: about 240–350 ml
- Height: about 12–15 cm
- Top diameter: about 6–9 cm
- Material: lead-free glass or crystal; often manufactured for clarity and durability
- Design: cylindrical or slightly conical shape, wide opening for easy pouring and stirring
Uses
- Primarily used for long whisky drinks, especially Whisky Highball
- Ice filled to about 2/3 of the glass, then whisky and top with a mixer
- Typically served as a single drink or as part of a longer bar order
Preparation
- Fill the glass with ice to about 2/3
- Add 40–60 ml whisky (adjust to strength and taste)
- Top with desired mixer (cola, soda, ginger ale or a mix)
- Stir gently and serve, preferably with a lemon twist or lime wedge as garnish
Variations and related glasses
- Collins glass: slightly taller and narrower than the highball, often 300–350 ml; used for the same type of long drinks
- Long drink glass: the general term for large glasses used for long drinks
- Highball vs Collins: the difference mainly lies in height and the ratio of liquid to ice
History
The word 'highball' comes from the early 20th century in the United States and refers to a long drink served in a tall glass. The glass was sought after because it allowed more ice and a longer dilution, which suited whisky-based long drinks.
Maintenance
- Wash the glass with soap and warm water after use, avoiding breakage by avoiding sudden temperature changes
- Most highball glasses are dishwasher-safe on a gentle cycle, but crystal glassware is recommended to be hand-washed.
