Master Blender

Master Blender is the top expert in blending and maintaining the house style at a whisky distillery. The role is responsible for assembling different maturation profiles, cask selections, and raw material sources, so that the resulting whisky expresses the house style in a consistent way across all releases.

• Responsibilities:
• Define the goals for the house style and flavor profile in collaboration with management and product development.
• Select and combine various raw materials and maturation profiles (malt, grain, type of cask, finish) to create the desired character.
• Oversee and approve blending batches for new products and for older products when changes are made, to ensure consistency.
• Develop and maintain guidelines for the house style, including aroma and mouthfeel characteristics, alcohol strength, and aging/storage strategies.

• Document the blending process and maintain records for future reference and quality control.

• Collaboration and relationships:

• Work closely with the Master Distiller, the quality department, and product development to ensure alignment between distillation and blending aspects.

• Lead tasting panels and sensory evaluations to verify that changes to recipes and casks fit the desired style.

• Competencies and skills:

• Excellent sensory abilities and the ability to calibrate flavors against specific style and quality criteria.
• Deep understanding of maturation, cask types, and how different casks affect aroma and mouthfeel.
• Analytical thinking, documentation ability, and the ability to manage complex blends and plan maturation periods.

• Leadership, communication skills, and the ability to convey blending principles to other teams.
