Fad Strength Edition
Definition A cask-strength edition (cask strength) is a whisky bottled at the natural strength it has achieved in the cask, without the addition of water prior to bottling.
Strength and Labeling ABV typically ranges from roughly 50% to 60% or higher and varies between distilleries and cask types. These bottlings are often without colorants and may be cold-filtered in certain cases, depending on the producer's practices.
Cask and Maturation The taste and aromas are strongly influenced by the chosen cask and maturation environment; wood, vanilla, and spice notes are common, often more concentrated than in standard bottlings.
Taste and Aroma Full-bodied and intense; notes of wood, dried fruit, citrus and spices are common. The result varies with the cask's age, type and production conditions.
Serving and Storage Serve at room temperature to achieve the full spectrum of aromas. Adding a few drops of water can open up aromas and make the whisky more drinkable at lower ABV; store in a dark place at a stable temperature.
Notes Cask-strength editions are often part of a distillery's special or limited-edition range and typically offer a more raw and intense experience than standard bottlings.
