Whisky cellar
- Organization and categorization
- The bottles are typically sorted according to one or more criteria: type (single malt, blended, bourbon, rye, grain), region (Scotland, Ireland, USA, Canada, Japan, others), distillery, age and/or the specific edition. Many collectors keep details in a catalog, including distillery, vintage, age, alcohol by volume (ABV), purchase date and price, special cask types and editions.
- Environment and storage
- Correct conditions include: constant temperature around 12-15°C, relative humidity around 50-70%, a dark environment without direct sunlight and strong temperature fluctuations, as well as good ventilation and protection against vibrations.
- The bottles are normally stored standing to protect the cork and preserve the seal; avoid strong temperature changes and light.
- Inventory and cataloging
- Shelves and storage systems should be sturdy and secure, with clear labeling. Many collectors maintain a detailed catalog with distillery, type, region, vintage, size (ml), ABV and purchase information. A digital catalog tool can be integrated for searchability and backup.
- Safety and maintenance
- Keep the cellar in a dry, ventilated room, protect against leaks and damp. Regularly check for signs of mold, damage to labels or seals, and ensure that the room is locked to prevent unauthorized access.
