Tasting box
- A tasting kit is a set of small sample bottles that makes it possible to conduct a comparative whisky tasting without opening full bottles.
- Sample bottles are typically 2–4 cl per sample, and the number of samples usually varies between 4 and 6. The total volume is therefore often around 8–24 cl.
- Contents of a typical tasting kit include samples of different whiskies, along with labels indicating the distillery and origin as well as the alcohol strength. A card or form to note aromas, tastes and finish often accompanies it.
- Usage for tasting:
- Preparation and setup: keep the glass at room temperature around 15–18 °C and ensure a quiet table.
- Aroma and first impression: swirl the glass lightly to release aromas and scents for the first impression for 8–10 seconds.
- Taste and evaluation: take a small sip, hold the liquid in your mouth for a moment, and note the aroma, flavor, body and finish.
- Comparison and notes: note differences and similarities between the samples and make a short conclusion.
- Cleaning and switching between samples: rinse the glass or use different glasses if possible to avoid cross-contamination.
- Variants and themes:
- Theme sets focus on regions such as Scotland, Ireland and the USA; cask types such as bourbon and sherry; as well as age categories and mash bills.
- Luxury or budget editions as well as gift editions for whisky clubs and as gifts.
- Storage and shelf life:
- Store the kit in a dark and cool place, away from direct sunlight and temperature fluctuations.
- Opened samples should be consumed within a period according to the manufacturer's recommendations, while unopened samples typically preserve aroma and color longer.
- Keep an eye on the labels and data such as alcohol strength and origin to maintain consistency in the tasting.
- Safety and use:
- Alcohol content typically around 40–60% ABV; enjoy in moderation and keep products out of reach of children.
