Valinch
Valinch is a long, thin pipette-like instrument used to withdraw small samples directly from a barrel during whiskey storage. The instrument enables assessment of color, aroma and taste without fully opening the barrel or exposing the entire contents to oxygen to the same extent as a full draw.
Construction and materials: - Most valinches consist of a long tube made of glass or stainless steel with a tip or a rounded end, which can be guided easily through the barrel opening or beside the bung. - The length typically varies between about 15 and 50 centimeters, depending on the barrel's dimensions and access to the liquid. - Some models have a small stop mechanism or an open/close valve to control the amount drawn up, giving greater control over the sample volume.
Use: - Before first use the instrument is thoroughly cleaned and dried. - Insert the tip through the barrel opening or an appropriate opening in the bung, and use gentle suction to draw whiskey up into the pipette. - Transfer the liquid to a sample vial or glass, and record relevant information such as barrel number, aging period, and time of sampling. - Rinse and clean between samples to avoid cross-contamination and influence on subsequent samples.
Advantages and limitations: - Advantages: minimizes oxygen exposure compared with full decanting, enables small, controlled samples from different parts of the barrel, and supports quick inspection of color, aroma and taste. - Limitations: limited sample size per draw, requires careful cleaning and maintenance to prevent cross-contamination, and access to the liquid can vary depending on the barrel's accessibility.
Related tools and context: - In practice other sampling tools are also used, such as a barrel thief, but a valinch differs by its long, narrow tip and ability to withdraw small amounts without removing significant quantities of the liquid. - A valinch is often referenced in the context of whiskey storage and evaluation during the barrel's aging process and is used by both producers and collectors to obtain quick marker samples without full decanting.
Maintenance and hygiene: - After use the valinch is cleaned thoroughly with warm water and a mild cleaning agent, rinsed thoroughly and dried, and stored dry. - Avoid letting liquid sit in the pipette for extended periods, as this can cause changes or contamination of the samples.
