Variations - Perfect Manhattan: equal parts sweet vermouth and dry vermouth together with whiskey and bitters. - Dry Manhattan: use dry vermouth instead of sweet vermouth. - A classic Manhattan can also be adjusted with a higher proportion of rye for a spicy body or a more bourbon-centered profile, depending on desired strength and flavor notes.

Origin and history Manhattan is believed to have been invented in New York around the 1870s and named after the Manhattan Club. It quickly became one of the best-known cocktails and has since served as the base for many variations and interpretations.

Flavor profile and serving The flavor ranges from spicy to gently sweet with a deep bitterness. Rye provides a dry, spicy base, while bourbon contributes warmth and sweetness. Vermouth adds herbal notes and balance, and the bitters provide structure and length. Served chilled in a smooth glass and traditionally garnished with a cocktail cherry or a twist of lemon peel for freshness.

Tips - Use a quality vermouth and store it refrigerated to preserve aroma and freshness. - Stir instead of shaking to preserve a clean, clear texture and avoid diluting the flavors. - Adjust sweetness and strength by varying the amount of vermouth and bitters to suit personal preference.
