Nosing Cap

Definition and purpose Nosing cap is a lid for a whisky glass used to retain scent and aroma during nosing and tasting by temporarily dampening the evaporation of volatile compounds. The cap is typically made of silicone or plastic and designed to fit common nosing glasses such as tulip-shaped and snifter-type glasses. The primary function is to concentrate the aromas around the glass and thereby enhance the perception of aroma notes during the initial sniff or first sip.

Materials and construction Most caps are made of food-grade silicone, often BPA-free, which makes them safe for repeated use and cleaning. Plastic variants also exist, but the sealing core is typically silicone or rubber to ensure a tight contact with the glass. Many models have a slight curved edge or raised ridges, which provide a tight seal without scratching the glass surface.

Fit and compatibility Nosing caps are available in different sizes to fit tulip- or snifter-style glasses. A good fit improves sealing and prevents rapid evaporation of aromas during nosing. When choosing a cap, it is important to ensure compatibility with the desired glass type and the glass's rim diameter.

Practical application - After swirling, the cap can be placed on to retain the aromas and enhance nosing and the first mouthful of taste. - The cap can be used during the nosing itself and for a short period if one wishes to concentrate the aromas; some tasters choose to remove the cap shortly before a sip to allow the aromas to release in the mouth. - During a longer tasting, the cap can be used as a temporary 'ventilation stop' to preserve freshness between scents and evaluations. - The cap's effect can vary with glass design and liquid volume; practices vary among experts and events.

Maintenance and care Silicone caps are washed in warm soapy water and thoroughly cleaned, especially around the cap’s edge and venting features. Many models are dishwasher-safe, but this depends on the manufacturer's instructions. Dry thoroughly and store in a dry place to prevent odor development.

Considerations and recommendations Using a cap can alter the perceived scent and aroma; therefore it is recommended to experiment with and without a cap to gain a better understanding of the whisky. For highly volatile aromas, the cap can be particularly useful.
