History

Founding and Early Years

  • Miyashita Sake Brewery was founded in 1915 in Tamano by the Miyashita brothers (Kamezo and Motosaburo). In 1915 they began new sake production in 玉野市 (Tamano) in the Okayama region, and the brewery moved in 1967 to its current location along the Asahigawa River in Okayama, where they draw water from underground for brewing.
  • The representative brand 聖 (Hijiri) was created in 1974 as a dry sake in OKAYAMA, and later the top-quality label '極聖' was introduced. The company has won many gold awards at national competitions and is today known for moving beyond pure sake production.
  • In 1994-1995 'Doppo' (地ビール) was introduced as a locally brewed craft beer in Okayama; the company has since developed a range of beers and other products and aims to be a complete supplier of alcoholic beverages.
  • Miyashita Sake Brewery aims to be a 'comprehensive liquor manufacturer' and is expanding exports to the USA, Europe and China with its various drinks.
  • In 2022 the company celebrated its 100th anniversary.

Whisky and Specialty Drinks

  • Whisky production began in 2011, and in 2015 a dedicated German pot still for whisky distillation was installed at the brewery. This marked a more formal foray into regional whisky production under the name 岡山蒸溜所.
  • In 2015 production of single malt Whisky Okayama began, and the first signature bottle was Single Malt Okayama Triple Cask (700 ml) at 43% ABV. This series and other whisky products have received international prizes, including TWSC (Tokyo Whisky & Spirits Competition) and World Whiskies Awards in the following years.
  • There is also an ANA-limited edition: ジャパニーズウイスキー シングルモルト岡山 シングルカスク 栗 (700 ml), which is Japanese whisky in a single malt / single cask style.

Production and Philosophy

  • In addition to sake and whisky, Miyashita also produces beer (Doppo), gin and liqueurs as well as other spirit types. The organization’s philosophy focuses on preserving and sharing sake culture and local history through products and experiences.
  • The company has a track record of achievements and awards, and it continues to expand its product range and international reach.

Visits and Experiences

  • Miyashita runs direct sales venues 酒工房 独歩館 and 宮下酒造 角打ち, where you can experience and buy products directly. There is also a craft beer offering through クラフトビアショップ独歩 in AEON Mall Okayama. The company also appears at festivals and open days; there are guided tours and opportunities to visit the brewery.

Philosophy

  • The company’s management philosophy is written as "Stand tall in the Sake industry" and includes the motto "Never stop challenging" and the ethical priority "Serve before profit" as well as a focus on conveying sake culture and local historical values.
  • Four satisfaction goals are shared: employee welfare, customer satisfaction, management satisfaction, and societal satisfaction. The company’s mission is to contribute to the Okayama community through high-quality alcoholic products and to ensure employee happiness and the company’s continued growth.
