About the distillery

Caledonian Distillery was located in Haymarket in Edinburgh and was a Scottish distillery that today lives on only in history. It was originally built as the Edinburgh Distillery and later became known as Caledonian. The site has been closed and demolished, and the land has been converted into housing.

History

The distillery’s history begins with Graham Menzies, who built the facility in 1855 under the name Edinburgh Distillery. Later, the site appears as Caledonian Distillery, and in the material it is also listed as established in 1885. Regardless of this difference, it is clear that the distillery had a long operating life in Edinburgh until it closed in 1988. After the closure, the area was developed with residential apartments, so the distillery is now completely gone from the site where it once stood.

Visit the distillery

Caledonian Distillery is not a place you can normally visit today. There is no public access, and the material also does not describe any tours, tastings, a shop, or other visitor facilities. The distillery is closed and demolished, so a visit in practice is about seeking out the site’s history rather than an active distillery.
