Badachro Distillery is located in the small hamlet of Badachro on the northwest coast of Scotland in Wester Ross, overlooking Badachro Bay, Skye, and the Outer Hebrides. It’s a small, family-owned distillery where Gordon and Vanessa make whisky, gin, and vodka in small batches. The place is interesting to whisky lovers because it combines a Highland location with local botanicals, handcrafted work, and a clear personal approach to production.

History (Historie)

The story begins with Gordon and Vanessa, who met at the Badachro Inn in the remote hamlet on the northwest Scottish coast. They married less than twelve weeks later and traveled the world before returning home to Badachro to realize the dream of a simpler and more peaceful life close to the mountains and pure water. Over time, they established Aird Hill and their B&B, while also setting their sights on a Highland-inspired, sustainable distillery. Gordon completed his formal distillery training and gained experience at a distillery in Perthshire, while Vanessa brought experience from horticulture and studies in botanicals. Together, they laid the foundation for Badachro Distillery, which was established in 2017. Since then, the distillery has become a small, independent family business with a strong local connection and a growing reputation for handcrafted spirits.

Raw materials and production (Råvarer og produktion)

Badachro works in small batches and builds its style on a classic copper still setup. The original still, Delilah, is now a museum piece in the shop, while production today uses copper pot stills named Ashleign, Scarlett, and DeDe. For whisky, it’s clear that the house works with both unpeated and lightly peated spirit, and that the spirit is selected and vatted on carefully chosen casks before being finished or bottled. The water is described as pure Scottish water, and the distillery also places emphasis on hand-foraging local botanicals for the rest of the spirit production. In the bottling process, hand labeling, batch numbering, and bottle numbering are part of the procedure, and the final bottle receives the distiller’s stamped initials as an additional quality mark.

Maturation and cask types (Modning og fadtyper)

Maturation is a major part of Badachro’s whisky identity. The Bad na h-Achlaise range spans finishes and matured expressions from first-fill Madeira casks, first-fill ex-rum casks, Tuscan red wine casks, and ruby port casks. The classic Tuscan Oak edition is described as finished in Tuscan red wine casks, while the cask strength version comes from the same carefully selected casks, but is bottled undiluted in a very small quantity. The Burns edition is a single cask release finished in a Tuscan oak Chianti cask. Across the releases, the distillery actively uses the casks to shape both color, sweetness, fruit, and structure.

Whiskies (Whiskyer)

The whisky range revolves around the Bad na h-Achlaise name and consists of several interpretations of the same Highland single malt. Here’s a more accessible Tuscan Oak, a Madeira Cask Finish, a Rum Cask Finish, and a more robust Tuscan Oak Cask Strength. There are also small and limited releases such as the Burns edition and a 5cl Ruby Oak. Common to the series is that it works with both peated and unpeated spirit and with casks that provide either fruity sweetness, dry spicy notes, or a more intense, full-bodied character.

Whisky style and flavor profile (Whiskyernes stil og smagsprofil)

The whiskies move from light smoke, lemongrass, and fresh hay toward matured fruit such as pear, apricot, and figs, as well as darker notes of raisins, syrup, and nuts. The Madeira edition leans toward orange peel, golden syrup, hazelnuts, and barbecued tropical fruits, while the Rum Cask Finish pulls toward vanilla, fudge, coconut, mango, banana, and marmalade. Overall, it paints a picture of a series where the Highland core gets both fruity sweetness, a hint of smoke, and clear cask influence.

Visiting the distillery (Besøg destilleriet)

Badachro Distillery welcomes visitors in the shop and on guided distillery tours. The shop is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm, and visitors receive a warm welcome, the opportunity to chat, and an insight into the gin, whisky, and vodka range. The tours are led by Gordon and Vanessa and take place as a personal and interactive experience, with visits to the still room, a glass of G&T or dram, and a guided tasting of five spirits in the sunroom. On the day, you can get 10% off when purchasing bottles, and drivers can take home a 5cl miniature.

Badachro builds its work on sustainable, family-owned, small-scale craftsmanship. The philosophy is closely tied to the nearby Highlands surroundings, where raw materials, water, and the landscape are allowed to leave a clear mark on the finished expression.
