Glen Elgin Distillery

Company history

  • Founded in 1898 by William Simpson and James Carle in Fogwatt, Moray, Speyside. Production began around 1900, but was temporarily halted after five months.
  • Ownership changed hands several times: bought in 1901 by Glen Elgin-Glenlivet Distillery Co.; 1906 by Blanche Co.; 1930 acquired by Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD). License and production later became White Horse Distillery under DCL (The Distillers Company).
  • In 1964 the distillery underwent a major renovation and was expanded from two to six pot stills.
  • After mergers, DCL became United Distillers (UDV) and since 1997 part of Diageo.
  • Glen Elgin's production has been closely tied to the White Horse blend; since 1977 it has also been recognized as an independent single malt.
  • Early years: electricity arrived only in the 1950s; Flora and Fauna releases began in 2001. In earlier years the distillery also produced whiskies of 12-, 16-, 20- and 32-year-olds; today it is primarily a 12-year-old single malt.

Production details

  • Location: Fogwatt, Moray, Speyside. Water source: Millbuies Loch Springs.
  • Production facilities: 3 wash stills (about 7,000 L) and 3 spirit stills (about 8,000 L); total six copper stills. Annual production around 1.8 million litres.
  • Production methods: unique use of worm tubs to condense alcohol vapors and add complexity; the malt is primarily produced for external malt suppliers and is used heavily in blends, but Glen Elgin is today recognized as a single malt.
  • Technical details: mash tun about 8.2 tons, six washbacks; water and quality control with a focus on clean fermentation and slow distillation to preserve fruitiness and refinement.

Whisky products

  • The range over the years has included 12-, 16-, 20- and 32-year-old single malts; today primarily a 12-year-old single malt.
  • Famous bottlings and releases: Flora and Fauna series; 100 Years of Glen Elgin (2000) – 19 years, cask strength; 32-year-old single malt (2003) at a lower ABV due to evaporation of the Angel's Share; the distillery is also popular among independent bottlers.
  • Glen Elgin has historically been a key component in the White Horse blend and remains an important source of single malts within Diageo's portfolio.

Tasting notes

  • House style is described as light and floral fruity.
  • Typical notes include marzipan, almonds and dried fruits (especially in 12-year expressions); a pronounced fruity profile achieved through extended fermentation and slow copper distillation.
  • The use of worm tubs contributes to body and complexity, and the distillation highlights a dry, floral Speyside character.

  • Early and notable bottlings such as 100 Years of Glen Elgin (2000) and later special releases (e.g., 32-year-olds) have contributed to the distillery's prestige among collectors and investors.
