Benromach Distillery
About the distillery (in brief)
Benromach is located in Forres in Speyside and is a family-owned distillery that has made the lightly peated, classic Speyside style its hallmark. Here, the whisky is handmade with local water from Chapelton Spring, malted with a small puff of peat smoke, and double-distilled in two copper pot stills. The result is a single malt with fruit, malt, and a subtle smoky veil that stands out clearly in the region.
History
Benromach was built in 1898 in Forres. In 1993, Gordon & MacPhail acquired the distillery, and restoration began with the goal of bringing back an almost forgotten Speyside style. That style was built on light smoke, which was previously more common in the region before more modern production methods made Speyside whisky lighter and without peat smoke. The distillery reopened in 1998, and Prince Charles presided over the opening. Since then, Benromach has worked purposefully to recreate a rich single malt with a delicate touch of smoke. Under Gordon & MacPhail, which was founded as a grocer’s business in 1895, the distillery has maintained a family-owned framework and, at the same time, developed both the Signature Range and the more experimental Contrasts series. This line reflects the desire to both preserve Speyside’s historic character and challenge it with new processes, malting techniques, and cask types.
Raw materials and production
Benromach works with Scottish barley that is grown locally and malted with a small puff of peat smoke to its own specifications. The malt is milled in the four-roller Boby Mill, and mashing is controlled by hand, while water from Chapelton Spring is fed into the mash tun in a controlled manner. Fermentation lasts three to five days and takes place in larchwood washbacks. Here, the distillery uses both brewers’ yeast and distillers’ yeast, which are dosed by hand, so fermentation is more complete and produces more complex aromas. Distillation is carried out double in two specially made copper pot stills. The wash still is set by hand, and the distillers use a traditional water test to assess purity before cutting the heart of the run. The spirit then goes on to mature in first-fill casks. The entire process is characterized by manual work and sensory assessment rather than automation.
Maturation and cask types
Maturation takes place especially in first-fill sherry and bourbon casks, which are described as crucial for the majority of the flavor and character. Benromach also uses virgin American oak in the more experimental Contrasts releases, and certain wine finishes such as Côte Rôtie and Bordeaux. The casks are filled by hand and placed in traditional dunnage-style warehouses, where the temperature is kept stable. The distillery highlights that the quality, specification, and origin of the casks matter greatly, and that the whisky is monitored throughout maturation. This gives both the classic releases and the more daring experiments a clear wood-and-cask profile.
Whiskies
The core range consists of Benromach 10 Year Old, 15 Year Old, and 21 Year Old, as well as the Cask Strength Vintage releases. The 10-year-old is the most straightforward introduction, with forest fruits, creamy malt, and a hint of smoke. The 15-year-old is the house’s most award-winning and shows the classic combination of sherry, bourbon, spice, and dark fruit. The 21-year-old is the older, more rounded highlight in the Signature Range, with more nuanced sherry influence. In addition comes the Contrasts series, where the distillery works with organic malt, stronger peat, unpeated spirit, wine casks, various drying methods, and other technical approaches. At the far end are the small batch, single cask, and ultra-aged releases, which provide a broader insight into the house style.

The style and tasting profile of the whiskies
Benromach moves through forest fruits, green apples, and pears that reappear in the 10-year-old, as well as darker hints of toffee, dark chocolate, and charred oak in the older releases. The distinctive smoky note is usually gentle and integrated, but can become more pronounced in the Contrasts series, where peated barley and smoky bonfire come through more clearly. The spices range from cracked black pepper and ginger to cinnamon and subtle spice, while the bourbon influence often delivers vanilla, malt, and soft sweetness.

Philosophy and craftsmanship
Benromach’s approach is built on handwork, senses, and experience. The distillery wants to preserve the classic, lightly smoky Speyside style while also developing new expressions through different malting, drying, and cask selection. Quality lies both in the raw materials, in the carefully selected casks, and in the way each part of the process is controlled manually. The experimental Contrasts series shows that curiosity and craftsmanship go hand in hand here, but always with the same underlying idea: whisky should have genuine character.
