About the distillery

Tobermory Distillery is located in the town of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull and makes both the fresh, unpeated Tobermory and the peated Ledaig. The distillery is known for its maritime island character, small batches, and a range that spans from the classic 12-year-old to longer-matured and more cask-influenced releases.

History

Tobermory Distillery was founded in 1798.

Tobermory Distillery was established in 1798 in the town of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull.

Raw materials and production

Tobermory produces single malt whisky on the Isle of Mull and works with two distinct expressions from the same distillery: Tobermory is unpeated, and Ledaig is peated. Production is described as small-batch craftmanship, where quality is prioritized over quantity, and where each batch is created with precision and care. Tobermory 12 is bottled in its natural form without added color and without chill filtration, so that mouthfeel and complexity are preserved. The maritime influence comes from coastal air, sea spray, and wild flora on Mull, which provide a subtle briny quality and a freshness that ties the whisky to the island. The house also works in gin with a direct connection to whisky production, as spirit from Tobermory’s stills is included in Hebridean Gin.

Maturation and cask types

Maturation ranges from American Oak Cask in Tobermory 12 to Oloroso finish in Tobermory 21. Several releases are built on a combination of ex-Bourbon and González Byass Oloroso Sherry casks, while the special Warehouse 1 release from 1995 has been matured for 14 years in ex-Bourbon and a further 11 years in Manzanilla Sherry casks. In addition, there is a red wine cask matured release, showing that the distillery actively uses casks to change depth, sweetness, saltiness, and complexity. The cask work appears as a way to underscore the distillate’s own character rather than to hide it.

Whiskies

The core range consists of Tobermory’s unpeated whiskies, with Tobermory 12 and Tobermory 21 as clear fixed reference points. Added to this are limited editions and more mature releases in the Hebridean Series, where the distillery works with longer aging and alternating sweetness, spice, citrus, nuts, and salt. The range shows a clear progression from light fruit and creamy sweetness in the younger releases to deeper sherry character, darker fruit, and more spiced complexity in the older bottles. Ledaig represents the peated side of the house and gives the whole blend a distinctive, more robust counterpoint.

The style and tasting profile of the whiskies

Tobermory’s style focuses especially on fresh citrus, creamy sweetness, and maritime saltiness. Orange, candied citrus, pineapple, blackcurrant, and apricot recur across several releases, while vanilla, caramel, toffee, and honey provide roundness. The spices stand out clearly with cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and spicy oak, and several whiskies also have a distinct sea salt or briny edge. On the Ledaig side, the picture darkens and becomes smokier, with smoky, spicy, vibrant, and earthy character.

Visit the distillery

The distillery can be visited, and there is both a Visitor Centre and shop on site. Tobermory Whisky Tastings are offered in 45 minutes for £35 per person, as well as a Warehouse Tasting Experience of 1 hour and 15 minutes for £50. During the Warehouse experience, Tobermory and Ledaig are tasted directly from the cask, and Warehouse 1 is highlighted as one of the distillery’s most popular experiences for whisky lovers. Philosophy and craftsmanship

Tobermory works with two different whisky expressions from the same location and places emphasis on small-batch craftmanship, precision, and quality over quantity. Tobermory 12 is bottled with natural colour and non-chill filtration, and Warehouse 1 releases are hand-selected and hand-filled by the Visitor Centre Team. The philosophy is closely tied to the Isle of Mull’s maritime surroundings, but also to a deliberate choice to let the distillate and the cask work together without losing the original maritime island character.
