Journeyman Distillery
Overview of the Distillery
Journeyman Distillery combines local history and craftsmanship across two large American campuses: The Featherbone Factory in Three Oaks, Michigan, and the upcoming American Factory in Valparaiso, Indiana. The distillery produces organic, kosher-certified spirits from locally grown Midwest corn and offers restaurants, tours, tastings, and spacious event spaces—a blend of production, gastronomy, and events in historic settings.
History
The buildings around The Featherbone Factory have been converted from a 19th-century Featherbone and corset-factory complex into a living distillery and experiential site. The Three Oaks facility now houses both production spaces and public activities such as restaurants, tours, and events. As part of its growth, Journeyman plans and is opening a new American Factory campus in Valparaiso with several eateries, a brewery, a rooftop bar, and event facilities; Valparaiso is already open for booking large events from 2026. In parallel with the expansion, the distillery has positioned itself as a grain-to-bottle producer with certified organic and kosher products, which has shaped both the product range and communications.
Raw Materials and Production
Production operates from a grain-to-bottle philosophy: grain is purchased locally in the Midwest and used in the house’s whiskey and bourbon lines. The distillery highlights the use of unfiltered water from an underground aquifer in Three Oaks and a range of grain blends in the various expressions (for example rye- and wheat-based products as well as four-grain blends). The product range also documents specialties such as a cherrywood-smoked single malt. Journeyman is certified organic and kosher, which influences the choice of raw materials and quality-control procedures. In addition to standard production, the distillery offers customer-accessible casks via a Barrel Reserve program, where whole casks are purchased, aged, and potentially bottled after the desired time.
Maturation and Barrel Types
Maturation takes place in American oak barrels, and the distillery sells both new and used barrels in sizes of 5, 15, 30, and 53 gallons. The Barrel Reserve program allows customers to choose barrel size and spirit and follow the maturation from approximately 6 months up to 5+ years, depending on the product. There are also opportunities to purchase already aged barrels, which can be bottled within 30 days. Additionally, previous contents such as Silver Cross Four Grain Whiskey are used for tapped barrels, which are used for barrel-aged cocktails at Staymaker restaurant on site.
Whiskeys
The range spans from the flagship Last Feather Rye to the single-grain edition Corsets, Whips & Whiskey, Featherbone Bourbon, Silver Cross Four Grain, and several single malts, including a cherrywood-smoked single malt. The products are highlighted as certified organic, kosher, and gluten-free, and the distillery’s selection includes both core range and special or cask-strength releases. In addition to bottled whiskeys, the company also offers whole barrels and customized bottlings via the Barrel Reserve program.
