Company History

  • Scapa was founded in 1885 and sits by Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands, north of Scotland. The name Scapa comes from the old Norse word for "boat."
  • The distillery is one of the few remaining manually operated distilleries, staffed around the clock by a small team of craftsmen and a Master Distiller.
  • The location by Scapa Flow and Orquil Springs plays a central role in production and the water source.

Production Details

  • Production and quality are controlled by craftsmen throughout the process; distillation is performed by a single pair of distillation stills, including the Lomond wash-still, installed in 1959.
  • The malt is dried without the use of peat smoke, highlighting a sweet and tropical profile.
  • Water for mashing comes from the nearby Orquil Springs; the mash converts malt into wort and releases tropical, honeyed notes.
  • All of it takes place in a small, manually operated facility by the sea, and the long fermentation (inspired by the islands' tranquil life) together with the unique distillation method contribute to a distinctive fruity, tropical style.
  • Maturation takes place in first-fill American oak casks from Tennessee and Kentucky and is stored in the warehouses in Orkney.

  • The long, slow fermentation process and the use of the Lomond wash-still together with non-peat-dried malt support a sweet, tropical character.
  • Aiming to capture Orkney's soul in every drop of the whisky through maturation in ex-American oak and aging on the islands.
