About the distillery

Bunnahabhain is located at the Sound of Islay on the island’s northern coast, and it is one of Islay’s most distinctive names because the house is built around unpeated single malt rather than the classic smoke. The distillery is known for its maritime location, its tall pot stills, and a style that combines sherry, sweet fruit, nuts, and a clear coastal character. It is both an active distillery and a place you can visit for tastings and the Warehouse 9 experience.

History

Bunnahabhain was founded in 1881 and has since been associated with craftsmanship, maturation, and a strong local identity on Islay. The location has always been part of the story: until the 1960s, the distillery could only be reached by boat, and even today the access road is narrow and single-tracked, emphasizing its remote character. The distillery also has a clear human narrative. Lillian MacArthur started in 1975 as a 16-year-old and, over five decades, became a key figure in everything from logistics and customs to hand bottling and the first Fèis Ìle releases. In 2025, Bunnahabhain marked her 50-year anniversary with a tribute, a named spirit still, and the release Lillian’s Legacy. The more recent storytelling from the house also shows how the distillery actively works with its signature through both 12 and 21 Year Old Cask Strength, using time and casks to present the same spirit in two very different expressions.

Raw materials and production

Bunnahabhain works with a distinctly unpeated house style, and the distillery itself emphasizes that the whisky has no peat smoke at the outset. The spirit is distilled in pot stills, and the stills are described as the tallest on Islay, with long swan necks that produce a lighter and more delicate spirit because the heavier flavor compounds have a harder time reaching the top. The finished whisky is bottled without added color and without chill filtration, so its natural character is preserved. The products also show that Bunnahabhain works broadly with both classic and more distinctive cask strength expressions, as well as with peated releases in certain single-series offerings. The house uses sherry, bourbon, refill, and a range of more distinctive casks, and it is precisely the interplay between the pure, coastal spirit and the casks that defines the production. The power does not come from smoke, but from the balance between sweetness, structure, and sea air.

Maturation and cask types

Maturation is clearly driven by casks. The core range is especially associated with bourbon and sherry, while the older releases often rest on Oloroso or pure sherry. Several limited editions show just how far the house goes in its cask experimentation: Fino sherry, Palo Cortado, Pedro Ximénez, Manzanilla, Amontillado, Marsala, Moscatel, Armagnac, Ruby Port, Tawny Port, Calvados, and Amarone appear in the range. Some releases are fully matured in a single cask, others are finishes, and 21 Year Old Cask Strength 2025 Edition, for example, received a 21-month finish in 21 hand-selected PX casks after maturation in ex-Oloroso. Bunnahabhain also uses maritime and coastal warehouses as part of its identity, and the distillery emphasizes the cask’s natural influence rather than coloring or filtration.

Whiskies

The core range is built around the 12-year-old, the 18-year-old, and the older bottles at 25, 30, and 40 years, supplemented by Stiùireadair as a more accessible, sherry-influenced expression. In addition come cask strength releases, distillery exclusives, rare whiskies, and the annual Fèis Ìle bottlings, which are often more experimental both in cask selection and style. Overall, the range stands on an unusual combination of unpeated Islay character, sherry depth, cask strength, and a few peated releases. It results in a portfolio that spans from entry-level whisky to very mature and rare bottles.

Style and flavor profile of the whiskies

Bunnahabhain has a distinct style with sweet fruit, nuts, vanilla, and caramel in the younger and more accessible expressions. In the older, more cask-influenced releases, dried fruit, berries, toffee, chocolate, and espresso appear, while sea salt, sea spray, and a light maritime breeze keep the profile anchored in Islay’s coastal landscape. The peated side delivers pepper, oak, and smoke in a few releases, but the main line is unpeated, sherry-driven, and rounded rather than heavy and ashy.

Visit the distillery

It is possible to visit Bunnahabhain. The distillery offers the Warehouse 9 Experience, which lasts 90 minutes and costs £50, as well as whisky tastings of 60 minutes with prices ranging from £35 to £275. The tastings take place in the new Visitor Centre with views over the Sound of Islay, and the experiences can be booked online.
