About the distillery

Brænderiet Limfjorden is located in Roslev by the Limfjord and is a Danish distillery with a clear focus on local ingredients and visitor experiences. Whisky enthusiasts get production, cask warehousing and tastings in play here, and the range spans from grain whisky to historical single cask releases and a jubilee single malt.

History

Historical whiskies and trilogy

Solvognen is described as the first of a series of historical whiskies. Later comes Guldhornene as the second edition in the historical trilogy, and Bronzesværdet completes the trilogy as the third and final edition. The Lindorm name is tied to the legend of the dragon said to rest beneath the distillery, and that story is part of the house identity. The series shows a distillery working with named releases rooted in history and myth.

Raw materials and production

Brænderiet Limfjorden works closely with local suppliers and uses only the best local ingredients in production. Danish malt recurs in several releases, and Solvognen is made with 30% smoked malt from Refsvindinge, while the jubilee whisky is produced from Danish malt, partly smoked malt. The grain whisky is smoke-free and shows the house’s rounder side, while Solvognen, Guldhornene and Bronzesværdet work with varying degrees of smoke. Production is therefore built around ingredient choices and variation in smoke profile, not around large industrial solutions. The distillery also emphasizes the Limfjord’s fresh waters as part of the place, and the local anchoring is underlined by describing production as closely tied to the area and its suppliers.

Maturation and cask types

Cask maturation is clearly influenced by sherry. The grain whisky and the jubilee whisky have been aged in PX sherry casks, the jubilee edition for 10 years in 128-liter casks by the Limfjord’s fresh waters. Solvognen has been aged 9 years in PX sherry casks, while Lindorm has been aged 6 1/2 years in 42-liter Oloroso sherry casks. Guldhornene and Bronzesværdet have matured in half PX sherry casks for 10 and 12 years respectively. In addition, there is a PX sherry which has been matured in former whisky and rum casks. Altogether this gives a clear profile where sherry casks are used as the main framework for sweetness, fruit and spice, often with a light veil of smoke.

Whiskies

The range includes an 11-year-old grain whisky, a sold-out Lindorm single malt, Solvognen as a lightly peated single malt, two single cask releases in the historical trilogy and a 10-year jubilee single malt. The grain whisky stands as the roundest and smoke-free edition, while Solvognen and the jubilee whisky provide a milder smoky style with sherry influence. Lindorm is the older and more limited release, and Guldhornene and Bronzesværdet are collector-oriented single casks with clear individual character. It is a small, distinct range where each whisky has its own role.

The whiskies' style and flavor profile

Across the releases, raisins, dried fruit and figs recur as a central fruit profile. In addition, there is dark caramel, vanilla and a distinct sherry sweetness, which especially carries the grain whisky and several of the single cask editions. The smoke varies from light to clear but balanced, and often finishes with warm spices, oak, cocoa or licorice. The whole is a sweet, fruity and lightly smoky style.
