About the distillery
Jura is located on the Scottish island of Jura and is a seaside distillery that has been making single malt since 1810 and again since the reopening in 1963. Today, the house is known for a fruity and balanced style, shaped by the island’s water, very tall stills, and a range that spans classic age statements to cask editions and rare vintage bottlings.
History
The distillery’s history begins in 1810, when Archibald Campbell established it on Jura under the name Small Isles Distillery. In 1831, Jura whisky was officially licensed, and in 1876, James Ferguson & Sons took over operations and invested heavily in restoring and modernizing buildings and machinery. After a period of closure in 1901, new life was breathed into the project in 1960, when the buildings were rebuilt and expanded. The 1963 reopening marked a new start for the island’s whisky production. Later, Whyte and Mackay came on board in 1994, and since then Jura has developed with a clear ambition to create a more accessible island whisky. In 2000, the distillery joined Fèis Ìle; in 2018, the brand was relaunched globally; in 2023, Jura whisky was UK’s Number 1 whisky; and in 2025, the packaging received a new design intended to make the whisky easier to understand.
Ingredients and production
Jura’s production is based on the island’s water, which starts high up at The Paps, where rain and meltwater filter through ancient rock and then continues on to Market Loch. From there, the water is taken to the distillery via natural streams and waterfalls. The spirit itself is created in the distillery’s very tall stills, which, according to the house, are among the highest in Scotland. The height and the broad shape increase copper contact during distillation and help give the fruity, aromatic new make spirit. The still profile is a central part of the house style, and barrels are then selected with the aim of highlighting the key elements in the complex island spirit. The result is consistently described as a whisky that is fruity, balanced, and made to be shared.
Maturation and cask types
Maturation ranges from American ex-Bourbon casks to rye casks, Bordeaux red wine barriques, rum casks, Cognac barriques, and various sherry expressions. Jura also uses Virgin American white oak in certain bottlings, and several releases combine first maturation in ex-Bourbon and then a finish in selected casks. The 28-year-old Rare Vintage has been aged in ex-Bourbon casks before a finish in Aged Amoroso Sherry butts, while the 1993 Vintage has received a long finish in French Cabernet Sauvignon barriques. 21 Year Old (Tide) is an example of a finish in virgin American white oak, and 1990 Vintage shows a combination of ex-Bourbon and Amoroso Oloroso Sherry butt. Jura clearly works with cask combinations to add extra fruit, sweetness, nuts, and spice on top of the distillery’s own spirit.
Whiskies
The core range consists of 12, 14, and 18 Year Old, all of which carry the fruity and balanced Jura style. In addition, there are Cask Editions with American Bourbon Cask, Caribbean Rum Cask, and French Cognac Cask, where different cask types set a clear direction. The travel retail series includes, among other things, White Oak Cask as well as 13, 16, and 19 Year Old. In the special and limited releases, you’ll find Perspective No. 01 as well as 12 Year Old Sherry Cask, 12 Year Old – Oloroso Edition, and 15 Year Old Sherry Cask. The rarer and older bottlings include 21 Year Old (Tide), 28 Year Old, and the vintage releases 1989, 1990, and 1993. Overall, the range paints a picture of a distillery that consistently works with an approachable house style, but with distinct variation in cask character and age.

The whiskies’ style and tasting profile
Jura repeatedly features peach, citrus, and apricot as its brightest fruit notes. Alongside this come vanilla, toffee, caramel, and honey, which give the whiskies a rounded and inviting sweetness. On the darker side you’ll find walnut, hazelnut, almond, chocolate, and sea salt, which add dryness and depth. In some bottlings, plum, fig, red berries, and tropical fruit also come through, while sherry and wine casks add sweet spice, cinnamon, and woody spice on top.

The distillery can be visited, and tours are available that offer a look behind the scenes at whisky production on the Isle of Jura. Visitors can also meet the team and hear about how the island shapes the whisky. Certain bottlings are described as available for tasting at the distillery.
