History
Glenglassaugh’s modern history is marked by stagnation and rebirth. The distillery was brought back to life in 2008, after more than twenty years of silence, and this reopening set a new story in motion, where old casks from the coastal warehouses became an important asset. This made room for both core releases and special rare releases that draw directly on the distillery’s maritime heritage. Today, the name is closely associated with the place by the sea and with a style shaped by the nature around the distillery.
Ingredients and production
Glenglassaugh describes its whisky as the result of its coastal surroundings, where land, sea, air, and spring water work together. The spirit is distilled in curved copper pot stills, and it is precisely the interplay between nature and craft that carries the expression. The distillery emphasizes both the visible and invisible influences from the surroundings, and this is reflected in a clearly coastal character. The warehouses by the sea are also especially important, because they hold casks that can later become rare releases with a clear connection to the location.
Maturation and cask types
Maturation takes place in several clearly documented cask types, especially bourbon, sherry, and red wine casks, but also manzanilla casks, port casks, as well as Pedro Ximénez sherry casks and Spanish wine casks. The combination points to a range where fruit, sweetness, salt, and depth can be built up through different casks. The distillery also highlights the dark oak casks and the coastal warehouses as part of the house identity, particularly for the more rare releases that emerged after the reopening in 2008.
Whiskies
The core range consists of Glenglassaugh 12 Years Old, Sandend, Portsoy, and 15 Years Old. The 12-year-old represents the house’s signature with fruit-driven coastal character; Sandend draws on tropical sweetness and sea salt; Portsoy offers a more smoky, maritime interpretation; and 15 Years Old moves toward a deeper, more mature profile with sherry and wine notes. In addition, there are rare and exclusive releases that come from old casks from the coastal warehouses.

Glenglassaugh’s whisky is characterized by tropical fruit, ripe fruit, and a distinctive maritime character. There is sweetness and freshness in 12 Years Old, tropical sweetness and a touch of sea salt in Sandend, while Portsoy brings a deep maritime tone and strong smoke into the picture. 15 Years Old adds more depth and sherry character to the whole, so the house style as a whole appears as a coastal balance between fruit, salt, and fullness.
Visit the distillery
Glenglassaugh can be visited, but only by private arrangement. Guests are offered tailor-made experiences with focused tours and tastings, and private dining can also be arranged as part of a more extensive visit. The distillery emphasizes that it does not accept walk-in visitors, and that throughout the year it holds a limited number of exclusive events. For the special tasting of Glenglassaugh 15 Years Old, pre-booking is required.
