About the distillery

Bowmore is located by Loch Indaal in the town of Bowmore on Islay, and is the island’s oldest distillery. Since 1779, they have worked with a clearly layered single malt here, where peaty smoke, maritime tones, and fruity sweetness are blended together. The distillery is particularly interesting to whisky lovers because both its history, floor malting, and the famous No.1 Vaults are still part of the house’s identity.

History

Bowmore’s name first appears in the records in 1779, but local archivists point to the possibility that distilling in Bowmore may have begun nearly ten years earlier. The first clear chapter in the history was written by David Simson, who already in 1766 secured the lease of the land and invested in, among other things, a new water supply from the River Laggan. Later came a series of ownership changes, each leaving its mark on the distillery. William and James Mutter significantly expanded the site from 1837 and made it a more commercial enterprise, while John Bell Sherriff took over in 1887 and the distillery soon after went into administration. In 1925, the Sherriff family returned, but production was halted in 1940, when the RAF took over the site during the war. After the war, new chapters followed: the Seadragon legend began to take shape in the 1970s under the Morrison family, Queen Elizabeth II visited Bowmore in 1980 as the first British monarch at a Scottish whisky distillery, and in 1993 came the first Black Bowmore release, which truly brought the distillery’s rare bottles into collectors’ spotlight. Later followed the 1957 release, the Aston Martin collaboration, and the record-breaking charity auction in 2023.

Ingredients and production

Bowmore works with its own floor malting, and the mash is turned by hand around the clock, with four hours between turns. The peat enters the drying phase in the kiln and provides the smoky signature that many associate with the house. Malting is supported by a Porteus Malt Mill, which for six decades has milled the grain almost continuously. In the mash house, grist and hot water are mixed in a large mash tun, which dates back to the Second World War, and the result is described as a dark liquid with a strong malted aroma. Fermentation takes place in six large washbacks made of Oregon Pine, and in the still house there are four stills, where the spirit is distilled. Only the Heart of the Run fills the casks, emphasizing the tightly controlled style. The water comes from a farm that runs seven miles into the village from River Laggan, and the entire process is anchored in the No.1 Vaults at Loch Indaal, which the distillery describes as a place that feels like stepping back in time.

Maturation and cask types

Maturation is clearly built around American ex-Bourbon casks and European Oloroso sherry casks, which recur in the core range. Across the lineup, sherry-seasoned casks are also used, along with Pedro Ximenez finish, Bordeaux wine casks, Ruby Port, Pinot Noir, and Sauternes. In the older and more exclusive releases, you see long runs in sherry casks and Bourbon casks, and several bottles finish in special wine or sherry types to add extra layers. Bowmore describes maturation itself as the phase where the whisky develops its complex, multi-layered personality.

Whiskies

The core range revolves around 12-, 15-, 18-, and 25-year-old expressions, while 21-year-old and 30-year-old releases stand out as more mature and special bottles. In addition, there is the Sherry Oak Collection and a range of Global Travel Exclusives, which further explore the house’s blend of smoke, fruit, and cask character. Across the range, Bowmore is generally more elegant and layered than forceful, with both classic Islay smoke and a clear sweetness from sherry, fruit, and bourbon casks. The rarest releases range from 40, 50, and 51 years up to the legendary 1957 and ARC-52.

Whisky style and tasting profile

Bowmore moves between soft peaty smoke, fresh lemon, and honey, and the older expressions add darker fruit, toffee, butterscotch, and cocoa. In several bottlings, you also find orange, pear, pineapple, tropical fruit, and green apples, while the sherry and port casks provide notes of dried fruit, tobacco, beeswax, and spice. The overall effect is a whisky family where smoke, fruit, and sweetness rarely stand alone, but are constantly kept in balance by oak, spices, and a discreet maritime edge.

Philosophy and craftsmanship

Bowmore’s philosophy is consistently characterized by intention and deliberate choices. Every part of the production is described as something carried out with a purpose, and the distillery places emphasis on building whisky layer by layer without leaving anything to chance. At the same time, the connection to Islay is central: the water, the sea, the No.1 Vaults, and the local landscape are part of how Bowmore understands its own expression.
