Historie

Opphem Malt AB runs a brewery and distillery in Opphem. The vision was set in 2018, and since then the company has worked on a locally rooted, artisanal production of beer and whiskey – small-scale with a focus on quality and proximity to the village. According to the site, production of malt drinks, beer, and whiskey was planned – primarily small volumes and with a strong local rooting. The ambition was to establish a production that could create jobs and events in the local area, and to offer own produced drinks in the local pub. Furthermore, it is described as an undertaking where local craftsmanship and environmental considerations are in focus, and where transport and environmental footprint are minimized by using raw materials and suitable materials from the local area. The building project and registrations have been part of the history, including public attention and municipal approvals; there is also mention of sponsorship collaborations and active inventory contributions along the way. In 2020-2025 there is a focus on opening for fater and privatfortælling around the whisky's development, as well as expanding with beer and malt-based products. There is also access to newsletters and social media for ongoing updates.

Produktion / Fremstilling

Opphem Malt is described as a small-scale place where production of malt drinks, beer and whiskey shall take place locally and with high quality. Emphasis is placed on combining craftsmanship with environmental considerations and resource utilization, and there is emphasis on using raw materials from the local area and minimizing transport by using Swedish oak for aging whiskey (external suppliers are mentioned as Thorslundkagge AB for the cask and Swedish oak). Modern small-scale equipment is highlighted as energy-saving and user-friendly, with the possibility for greater involvement of the local community in the production. Whisky is distilled and stored locally in Opphem, and the production is expected to include both whiskey and beer in small batches, sold through faterbjudanden, Systembolagets private import-channel and local serving venues. There is also mention of a plan to measure and improve the execution of the production; mention of using a mash tun and various techniques during the setup of the distillery.

Produkter / Whisky-serien

According to the website, Opphem Malt plans to produce malt drinks, beer and whisky – small quantities of high quality with local connection. Whisky is described as being malt-based and expressed as a craft whisky, aged on site in Opphem. Different characteristics of the distillate are mentioned: a moderately peated distillate and an unpeated newmake with fruity, malted notes, which are expected to develop during aging. Part of the project involves private purchase of barrels of spirits by private individuals, where one can follow the development and participate in tastings. There is also mention of using Swedish barrels from exported suppliers and local region for maturation, which gives a unique connection to the area. There is mention of aging whisky in Opphem and being able to tend your own barrel and name it, as well as participate in tastings to learn the core and development of the whisky.

Besøg / Oplevelser

The site mentions open-house events and opportunities to experience Opphem Malt: for example open-house at the distillery and the brewery in Rimforsa and the possibility to tour production and visit the warehouse where the whisky is aged. Open House events are mentioned several times, and an active Facebook group is highlighted and the possibility to participate in tastings and study trips related to Opphem Malt. There is also mention of small local events and the possibility of a guided tour, coffee service, and light refreshments as part of Open House.

Filosofi

The philosophy behind Opphem Malt includes a strong local rooting and a belief that craftsmanship and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand with a commercial venture. By using local raw materials and predominantly Swedish oak for aging, they seek to minimize transport and reduce environmental footprint. The project emphasizes involving and engaging the local community through membership, events, and voluntary contributions, and there is emphasis on collaboration with authorities, suppliers, and sponsors to make the construction work. The descriptions show an openness to involve the local area in the production and in different roles, from sponsorship to construction and support of long-term development.
