History

Cradle Mountain Whisky is a Tasmanian single malt distillery located in North-West Tasmania. Founded in 1989 by Brian and Fay Poke, the company was the first commercial whisky production in Tasmania and has over the years developed a unique approach to maturation and flavor development. In its early years the company operated under various names, such as Darwin Distillery/Franklin Distillery, before later becoming Cradle Mountain Whisky under the Lahra family. The philosophy behind the whisky reads: "True quality cannot be hurried".

Key times and development

  • 1988–1989: Foundation and start of whisky production in Tasmania.
  • 1990–1995: Production and growth, export to international markets began.
  • 2015: Rebranded to Cradle Mountain Whisky following the Lahra family's acquisition and introduction of new techniques and governance.
  • 2016+: Development of the Sol Lahra barrel concept (cooperage with different staves such as ex-Sherry, Port Oak Heads, Virgin Oak and Bourbon).
  • 2017: Development of The Cradle Glass to improve nosing and tasting experience; hand-blown and designed by the distillery.

Production / Manufacturing

  • Location and source: Whisky is produced in northwestern Tasmania and uses Cradle Mountain water as well as Macquarie-built building materials and Sol Lahra barrels. The water is described as Cradle Mountain spring water, and the building uses Macquarie-built materials in production.
  • The Sol Lahra barrel concept: An innovative cask design where different staves (e.g., ex-Sherry, Port Oak Heads, Virgin Oak, Bourbon) are combined to create complexity and aromas. The stave concept was conceived by the Lahra family and is used for aging their spirits.
  • Non-filtered whisky: Many releases are described as non-filtered, contributing to a robust flavor profile.
  • Ingredients: Macquarie barley, Cradle Mountain spring water and special casks (Sol Lahra) are used consistently in production.

Philosophy / Approach to Whisky

  • The philosophy behind Cradle Mountain Whisky is evident in statements: "Time and quality is our whisky philosophy" and "True quality cannot be hurried." Emphasis is placed on slow maturation, careful nosing, and balanced aging conditions to achieve high complexity and minerality from Tasmania's natural resources.
  • Emphasis is placed on Tasmania's natural landscape: the highland spring water and the local materials (Macquarie barley) as part of the identity.

Notes on Availability

  • Several releases are marked as sold out or through ballot schemes for members; there is also information about higher-ABV variants and special boxed sets.

Sources indicate an active company with ongoing products and exclusive releases, as well as a strong interpretation of a historical and geographic identity in Tasmania.
