Historie

  • Backwoods Distilling Co was founded in 2017 by Bree and Leigh Attwood in Yackandandah, Victoria. The family runs the distillery as a small-batch craft production of whisky and gin. The distillery describes itself as true Australian craftsmanship, telling stories of local heritage, nature and innovation.

Produktion/Fremstilling

  • Whisky and gin are produced as small-batch craft products. Emphasis is placed on local farming and botanical ingredients from Australia, as well as casks that tell an Australian story. Whisky starts with heritage grains such as rye, wheat and barley from Riverina, and matures in a range of casks including White Oak, ex-Shiraz, aged wine casks and special Red Gum stave-fired casks to create conversation and storytelling in the flavor.
  • Notes include vanilla, coconut and apricot, with a buttery honey finish.
  • Rye Whisky, Shiraz Barrels (700ml): Price around AUD 149. An award-winning variant in the core range, aged in ex-Shiraz casks, providing a balance between spicy rye and deep fruit notes. Notes include ginger spice, rye bread and a creamy chocolate finish. The barley grain is 100% Australian.

Gin

  • Muscat Grape Gin, 500ml: A High Country collaboration gin between Backwoods and Scion Wine. The blend pairs our dry, botanical base with the sweetness of Muscat grapes (Rutherglen). Limited edition.
  • Salted Lime Gin, 700ml: Australia's best citrus gin according to awards. Made with native lime and old man saltbush, delivering a pronounced citrus experience with a light salted note. Bottle format 700ml.

Besøg / Oplevelser

  • The distillery's doors in Yackandandah are open Wednesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 16:00. Tastings, cocktails and bottle shop are available. Visitors can enjoy a tasting paddle or cocktails by the copper stills. A key experience also includes the option to hand-fill a whisky and receive a personalized label. There is also a DIY platter option to enjoy along with tastings and cocktails, and an overview of local dining options in the area.
  • Whisky Hand Fill Experience: an exclusive on-site experience where you hand-fill your own 500 ml bottle directly from the Special Reserve Cask under the guidance of the team. Includes a personalized label and gift bag. Price AUD 150 per person. Current cask: Single Malt, Apera Cask – 48% ABV. Walk-ins are welcome, but depending on demand there may be a need for advance booking.
