Historie

Amber Lane Distillery is located on the NSW Central Coast and was established in 2017. The distillery is known for its focus on long maturation cycles, large premium barrels, and the use of European distilling principles. With founders such as Rod Berry and Phil Townsend, the company is described as part of a journey to produce refined, complex, and balanced whisky. The distillery highlights its approach as a combination of curiosity, humility, and the pursuit of the extraordinary – and sees itself as part of a larger Amber Lane family that shares knowledge and the joy of whisky.

Produktion / Fremstilling

Amber Lane uses a 3600-liter copper still (Mary Rose) with steam jacket, and copper insulation construction. The production emphasizes double-distillation using a pot still designed for maximum copper contact, which contributes to more complex aroma pathways. The mash bill's consistency and the use of specially selected barley support a creamy sweetness in the raw spirit.

Barrel- og lagringsstrategien er central: the use of large barrels and longer aging together with a deliberate blend of cask types (Spanish Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso Sherry as well as Kentucky Bourbon) to create depth and complexity. Amber Lane also focuses on higher ABV in releases and non-chill-filtration to preserve the most flavour-producing esters and congeners.

There is an emphasis on using well-rounded, well-developed barrels rather than new ones, and Cognac-inspired maturation techniques are also explored to take advantage of the climate for longer, more subtle integration. Work is done with various cask combinations and long periods in more inert oak to emphasize the integration of flavors rather than dominating oak character.

The distillery offers open-day events and private tastings and blending classes, which can be held at the distillery or as home visits for groups.

Filosofi

Amber Lane describes a philosophy based on community and dedication to the craft: Whisky is life. Notice the miraculous, savour what is special, and find balance in all that you do. Emphasis is placed on humility and adventure in the work of whisky, and the distillery highlights its production techniques as accessible through openness and sharing of knowledge. Key technical principles include: - Consistent mash bill for uniform spirit - Double distillation and copper contact for complex flavour chains - Use of well-made and older external cask influences (PX, Oloroso, Apera) for depth - Maximized aging with longer oak influence and slower integration - Non-chill filtered to preserve esters and compounds - Deliberate choice of higher ABV in most releases

The history and philosophy unfold through the story of Amber Lane's distillation destiny and the human stories behind Amber Lane, including co-founders Rod Berry and Phil Townsend and their approach to constant improvement and open knowledge exchange.
