Historie
Distillerie G. Miclo was founded in 1962 by Gilbert Miclo in Lapoutroie in Alsace, at the foot of the Vosges. The family chose early on to prioritise the quality of eaux-de-vie over quantity, which has earned the distillery numerous awards and a presence in Michelin-starred restaurants. In 2009 the third generation joined the company. For the whisky segment, the first attempts at malt distillation began in 2011, and the first bottles hit the market in 2016. To differentiate themselves from the existing regional supply, they decided to produce exclusively Single Malt – not blends – and specifically two Tourbé variants. The Pays Welche region and the water source at Étang du Devin, about 950 metres above sea level, contribute to their identity.
Produktion og filosofi
They have chosen to join IG Alsace, which guarantees origin and a defined way of production. The malt is delivered monthly by METEOR, a family business north of Strasbourg. Distillation, maturation, and bottling take place in Alsace. No sugar, caramel or flavorings may be added, and the whisky is not cold-filtered to preserve its aromas after maturation. The water comes from the spring in Alsace at an elevation of 950 metres, which reinforces the connection to the Vosges and Pays Welche.
Produkter: Whisky-serien
Welche’s Whisky consists of four Single Malt references: aged in Burgundy casks, aged in Sauternes casks, and two smoked/peated variants (Fumé and Tourbé). The alcohol content sits at 43% or 46%, and the formats are 70 cl and 20 cl. All whiskies are fully matured in casks from France’s major wine regions (Burgundy and Sauternes) and are not cold-filtered.
There is also an Édition Limité with small batches (Small Batch) and Single Cask releases such as Cuvée des Grands Palais. For example Small Batch #6 Cherry Cask Finish — a smoky whisky with a finish in a cherry eau-de-vie cask for about 3.5 years — and Single Cask #7 Cuvée des Grands Palais — eight years in Burgundy cask, brut de fût at 58.9%.
Filosofi
G. Miclo follows the IG Alsace charter to ensure origin and method of production. No colorants or flavorings may be added. The whisky aims to preserve its natural fruit character through carefully selected casks and a non-chill-filtered approach. The water source at Étang du Devin and the location at the foot of the Vosges underscore the link to Pays Welche.
