History
Brennevinsgrova was founded in 2019 by Harald Strømmgjerde on the family farm in the Sunnmøre Alps, deep in a valley near Sykkylven. Distinguishing features are the local location and a focus on using the surroundings as a source of flavor, as well as recognition for their products. The distillery has received recognition in the form of the BU Prize in Møre og Romsdal for 2024, as a sign of their branding, innovation and local value creation.
Production/Manufacturing
Their approach is described as traditional: potato spirit, water and spices are heated in the distillation process and become vapour, which then becomes liquid alcohol through gradual cooling. The distillation, in their method, is carried out over 10–12 days to preserve more flavor, instead of the more standard daily process used by larger producers. The water used in production comes from a glacier and is believed to contribute to a unique Sunnmøre flavor. Emphasis is placed on short transport distances and local raw materials – raspberries from Valldal and butare from Herøy – which, together with ice water, contribute to the characteristic Sunnmøre flavor. It is also highlighted that production is run with a traditional artisanal feel and that their gin is described as craft gin.
Whisky Series
Brennevinsgrova has a whisky product line consisting of Whisky Double Cask Single Malt. This whisky is described with tasting notes of sherry, raisins, malt and chocolate and is matured in Oloroso- and Pedro Ximénez casks.
Visits/Experiences
The distillery is located at Bakkane 29, 6220 Straumgjerde and is surrounded by the Norwegian mountain landscapes in the Sunnmøre Alps, situated deep in a valley outside Sykkylven. The distillery's identity is closely connected to its location and the water source from the glacier.
Philosophy
The philosophy at Brennevinsgrova focuses on the use of local, high-quality materials. Raspberries from Valldal and butare from Herøy are combined with glacial water to achieve a unique Sunnmøre flavor. Emphasis is placed on a traditional approach and craft, with a clear focus on preserving flavor through longer distillation periods.
