History
Atlungstad Distillery sits beside Atlungstad Brenneri, Norway's oldest distillery still in operation. On the shores of Lake Mjøsa, we have distilled potatoes and made our renowned Norwegian barrel-aged aquavit since 1855. Since 2013 the distillery has been classified as part of Norway's industrial and cultural heritage. We are proud to continue the tradition of making high-quality spirits and using potatoes, herbs and spices from local farmers. In 1855, farmers in the Stange area established Atlungstad Brenneri. The use of pure water and its location at the outlet of Fjetreåa at Nedre Atlungstad farm was important, and proximity to Mjøsa made transport of goods possible mainly by boat. Atlungstad was one of Norway's leading distilleries in the latter half of the 19th century and up to the end of the industrial spirits production at Atlungstad in 2008. The distilleries in the region around Mjøsa played a central role in the development of Norwegian aquavit.
In 2011 Atlungstad distillery resumed production of potato spirit, and in 2014 the first batches of our own Atlungstad aquavit arrived. Atlungstad is the only historic distillery in Norway where potatoes are still distilled in the traditional way every year. By creating Atlungstad products for our customers, we carry on the tradition and craftsmanship from what historically was Norway's most important aquavit region. We welcome you to Atlungstad Brenneri – beautifully located on the shores of Mjøsa, only a one-and-a-half-hour drive from Oslo. With knowledgeable guides you gain insight into the history, production, people and the passion that makes our Atlungstad aquavit so special.
Production and Manufacture
Under the discerning eye – and nose – of our Master Blender we select the very best herbs and botanical ingredients for our aquavits. We prefer to use local or locally sourced ingredients. By law, the base for a Norwegian aquavit must be rectified (pure) potato spirit made from Norwegian potatoes. We use our own rectified potato spirit, distilled from locally grown potatoes from the Stange region. This is a unique process we are proud of – it not only supports local agriculture but also keeps Norway's oldest potato distillery in operation. Most of the ingredients we use are locally produced or sourced from other Norwegian producers. Caraway – the most important spice of aquavit – for example comes from our neighbor, Sveen Farm.
