History
- Det Norske Brenneri describes that they produced Norway's first single malt whisky. Audny Series 1 was launched in 2012 and has since sold out. The next generation of whisky arrived in autumn 2015 with a new series launching Eiktyrne Quadruple Batch I. Master Blender Jon Bertelsen contributed to the story and the ongoing development of Norwegian malt whisky. The Audny name is linked to an old sailing ship that ventured out into the world toward the end of the 19th century. Eiktyrne is based on a mythical hart from Norse mythology that feeds on Yggdrasil's branches. In the years that followed, new variants and a new generation of whiskies arrived with a focus on cask aging and complexity.
- Det Norske Brenneri also presents Flo og Fjære Grimstad Edition as a Norwegian blended malt whisky, as well as a range of other malt-based products in the Eiktyrne series. Several of the whiskies have been described as cask-aged and have been matured in various casks such as oloroso sherry, PX, port, and other special casks.
- Central to the company's history is a focus on Norwegian ingredients, craftsmanship, and cask aging. Master Blender Jon Bertelsen is described as a key figure who helps carry the story forward.
Production / Manufacturing
- One of the core ideas for malt whisky production is described as follows: take the best malted barley, brew a beer free of hops from the malt in a good brewery, distill slowly in a copper still, remove the heads and tails, dilute to about 55 percent, and age in a good oak cask. This describes an approach that does not need to be complicated in order to achieve aging and complexity.
- Traditional double distillation is used in the Eiktyrne series, with variation in cask aging. Cask-aged variants are described as coming from different casks that give different flavors, including American Virgin Oak cask, oloroso sherry cask, brandy cask, and Montilla-Moriles PX cask in certain batches.
- The series also includes Rin and Rennande, which are aged in American oak and French brandy casks, finished in other casks, resulting in a complex finish.
- It is emphasized that production is craft-oriented and that emphasis is placed on quality and control, with small batches and traditional processes.
