History

  • Ulrich was founded in 1854 by botanist Domenico Ulrich, the fourth generation of a Piedmontese family. The company began as a processing facility for medicinal herbs and was among the first of its kind in Italy to engage in industrial production. The production of vermouth and amaro made Ulrich popular as an aperitif, and Domenico received numerous awards as well as a patent worthy of royal recognition issued by Italy. In the 1900s, the company shifted to the production of medicine for the war effort and was later sold to another pharmaceutical company. In 2016, Lorenzo Marolo from the renowned Marolo distillery attempted to revive recipes and traditions from the original Ulrich company.

Through updated techniques and fidelity to the older recipes, Lorenzo has revived Ulrich amaro and a range of vermouths at his distillery, all produced exclusively with local botanical ingredients and a base of Cortese wine, just as Domenico would have done. By using the same 19 ingredients as in the original recipe, Ulrich amaro is built primarily on anise, gentian and genepi, giving a classic profile distinctive of the Piedmontese Alps. The vermouths are all based on Cortese wine and are part of the Vermouth di Torino appellation, which may only be produced in Piedmont. Under the appellation's rules, the bitterness comes from a local Artemisia variety together with other local botanical ingredients to achieve a balanced flavor profile.

Production

  • The production is centered around a Cortese wine base for vermouth and the use of 19 ingredients from the original recipe for the amaro. The classic flavor profile is achieved through the use of anise, gentian and genepi in the amaro, and through a bitter component based on a local Artemisia variety combined with other local herbs in the vermouths. All products are produced with local botanical ingredients and follow the Vermouth di Torino appellation traditions, underscoring authenticity and the region's style.
